AUSTIN, Tex. (Friday, January 22, 2010) – The Austin Aztex professional soccer team announced today that 2009 All-League Second Team midfielder Lawrence Olum has signed a two year contract with the club pending USSF approval.  Olum joins the Aztex after spending the 2009 season with the Minnesota Thunder and the 2007-08 seasons with the Portland Timbers.

“We are delighted to have signed Lawrence, especially considering the competition we had for his signature,” said Aztex head coach Adrian Heath.  “He will be a great addition to the squad.  After playing against him last season, we were very impressed with what he can do on the pitch to help his team.”

Last season the 6’ 2” Olum made All-League Second Team honors after tallying five goals and three assists in 28 games played.  The central midfielder logged the fourth most minutes on the Thunder with 2,399.  During his two seasons at the Timbers, Olum saw time in 44 games and tallied six goals and one assist.

Olum grew up in Nairobi, Kenya playing soccer on the streets before being approached to attend college in the United States.  Olum made his way to the US to attend college at Missouri Baptist University. The three-time All-American honorable mention led the Spartans to the conference championship his senior season.

Olum joined the Timbers in 2007 after a successful stint with the St. Louis Lions of the PDL where he guided the team to a 7-3-6 record in its inaugural season in 2006. During that season, Olum led the Lions with a team-high nine goals.
