The Aztex U23s returned to the form they’ve shown nearly the entire season, with a win and another clean sheet. A record-setting crowd of 1,523 came to see the action first hand.
The Aztex dominated throughout the first half, and had a good number of threatening chances, but were unable to finish any of them. The half came to a close scoreless, with El Paso earning two yellow cards. Immediately following the end of the first half, El Paso head coach Miguel Murillo was ejected from the game.
In the second half, the Aztex were finally able to get something on the scoreboard to show for their hard work. With an assist from Jamie Watson, Marcelino Uriarte scored in the 56th minute. The Patriots fought back hard, but the Aztex were able to hold them scoreless. In the 90th minute, Andres Cuero was fouled in the box, and Jamie Watson converted the resulting penalty kick, giving Austin a final score of 2-0.
Austin, now 5-1-1, is on the road for their second game of the weekend, as they take their considerable offense and unmatched defense to Dallas to play the DFW Tornados Sunday night. The Tornados are in 4th place in the Mid South Division, having 10 points and a 3-3-1 record.
The Aztex return home to Dragon Stadium Tuesday night for their big Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game against the Atlanta Silverbacks. This first-round game is a must-win, as the loser will be eliminated and the winner will proceed to the second round.
