Aztex Defeat Leones 2-0
Add another shutout to cement division lead
The Aztex U23s were victorious over the Houston Leones in their second meeting, scoring twice and keeping yet another clean sheet . The two teams played in Houston's Soccer World Center, their first meeting in that venue. Both Aztex goals were scored in the first half: a shot by Jamie Watson in the 21st minute, with an assist by Juan Carlos Vicens, and a penalty kick by Andres Cuero shortly before the end of the first half. Tempers flared in the second half, and a Leones player was ejected in the 59th minute. The Austin team, however, was unable to add further to the scoreline, which finished at 2-0. The Aztex remain solidly at the top of the Mid South Division table with 22 points. They are trailed most closely by the Laredo Heat, who have 18 points after their 3-0 win over Baton Rouge at home last night.

Aztex Romp to 4-0 Road Victory over DFW
The Aztex took the opportunity tonight to rest a few players ahead of their important U.S. Open Cup game on Tuesday evening, but still romped to a 4-0 win on the road in Dallas. Austin started the scoring in the 37th minute through Andres Cuero, but were unfortunate not to lead the Tornados by more than the one goal at the break, having had all the play in the first half.
In the second half the Aztex dominance paid dividends with Cuero adding a second goal, a blistering 25-yard strike in the 61st minute. Just three minutes later he completed his hat-trick, the first in club history. The game was well and truly wrapped up in the final few minutes when Beau Fraser made a decisive break before feeding Willy Guadarrama to slot home the Aztex’s fourth.

Aztex Fall to Brilla 2-0
U23s suffer first defeat of season in Mississippi
After recording shutouts in their first five games, the Austin Aztex suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 2-0 at the hands of the Mississippi Brilla Saturday night in Clinton, MS. The Aztex controlled the ball much of the game and outshot the Brilla 7 to 3 during a scoreless first half.
The Brilla finally found the back of the net on a header by Charles Hines that snuck just under the crossbar in the 51st minute. This ended the incredible run by our defense of 500 minutes without allowing a goal. The Brilla struck again in the 81st minute to secure a victory for the home team.
Despite the loss, the Aztex remain in first place in the division, leading second-place Houston by 4 points. The Aztex return to Austin for a home game Friday night with the hope of starting another undefeated streak against the El Paso Patriots.

Aztex Qualify for U.S. Open Cup
Mississippi Brilla loss clinches spot for Austin

There was a possibility that the Mississippi Brilla would overtake the Aztex’s impressive season-opening record, but that chance slipped away tonight in Houston, as the Leones handed Brilla a 3-0 defeat. That leaves the Aztex atop the PDL’s Mid South Division for the first 4 games, and qualified to represent the division in the Cup tournament.
The draw for the first round match-ups will be held Tuesday, May 27. At that time, we will know who the Aztex’s first-round opponent will be. MLS teams don’t participate in the first round, so it will be a USL-1, USL-2 or USASA team.
Congratulations to the entire Aztex organization, especially the players & coaches, for an amazing start to this inaugural season!

U23s To Open 2008 Season In El Paso
First-ever Austin Aztex match to be played against El Paso Patriots
The Austin Aztex play their first official game of the 2008 PDL season Saturday in El Paso. Their opponents will be the formidable El Paso Patriots, the 2nd place team in the Mid South Division last year. The Patriots’ website has this to say about the opening of the season:
New head coach and Director of Soccer Miguel Murillo will bring an attacking style of soccer to Patriot Stadium for the Pats’ fifth campaign in the Premier Development League. A mix of new faces and familiar names fills out the 2008 roster, but the aim is the same — a return to the top of the table in the Mid-South and a PDL title.
Murillo is a 16-year veteran of the Mexican League where he played for First Division giants Cruz Azul and America, and has a FIFA “A” coaching license. Murillo’s mix of incoming collegiate talent like Ben Everson of West Texas A&M and longtime Patriots like Omar Mora should give the coach plenty of options on the attack, while middle defender Hugo Sámano returns to anchor the back line.
Kick-off time is 8:30 CT. Aztex fans not making the 8-hour drive to El Paso can watch video of the game on the Patriots’ website, www.elpaso-patriots.com. There are also plans for a group of independent supporters to host a watching party, open to all, at Mother Egan's Pub (715 W. 6th St.).

U23s Lose to Trinity University 1-0
Preseason winning streak comes to end

III powerhouse had the majority of the play in the first half and was deservedly ahead at half-time 1-0. The Aztex tried to make a comeback in the second half, but was limited by a well organized Trinity University side. The Austin team was able to contain the Tiger offense, however, for a final score of 1-0.
This was the last pre-season game for the Aztex, and their first defeat. The team leaves for their first game of the 2008 PDL season Friday morning, as they travel to challenge conference rivals El Paso Patriots Saturday night.

U 23 Team Tryouts a Great Success
180 Players Participate in 2nd Round
This past weekend saw the second Aztex tryout held at St. Edwards University. Once again we were blessed with fabulous Austin weather and an incredible turnout. We had over 180 players come along to display their skills before the Aztex coaches. All the fields were buzzing with games between the aspiring players and the coaches had the difficult task of cutting the talent pool down to around 40 players who were invited back for further playing time on Sunday.
After much consideration and discussion between the coaching staff the Aztex signed the first six players to the U 23 Roster!! More details of the signings to follow.
We would like to thank all players who came out over the past two weekends to tryout. The commitment, attitude and work rate at the event was first class and our coaches identified several young players who they will be watching closely over the next twelve months. Thanks again from all the Aztex coaches and management.
